Washroom Refurbishment for Blackness Castle, Linlithgow

Washrooms

Client: Historic Environment Scotland

Location: Blackness, Linlithgow

value: £55,000

Clansman Interiors are currently undertaking a refurbishment project for Historic Environment Scotland. This consists of the refurbishment of washrooms across seven Castles, Palaces and Abbeys throughout Scotland.

One of the first completed projects was Blackness Castle – a popular filming location for tv shows and films including Hamlet 1990, The Bruce 1996, Doomsday 2008 and most recently the US TV drama Outlander which has brought a lot of tourism to the Castle and location.

Client Requirements:

Blackness Castle is an A listed historic building, therefore, projects of this nature can be intricate meaning extra care must be taken to preserve the location as far as possible.

New unisex and accessible toilets were to be supplied and installed by Clansman Interiors.

Existing male and female toilets had to be stripped out to enable the installation of new washroom facilities. A small leak was discovered during the strip out which is one of the challenges with working in old buildings as these leaks can go undetected therefore causing unknown damage. Floorboards and joists had to be replaced as a result; however, the floorboards had to be specially cut as the size of the original ones no longer exists as a standard measurement due to the age of the building.

The installation of the new partition’s ceilings and M&E works all went relatively smoothly with just the usual onsite adaptations required when working in an older building.

Key features of the project

The unique stand out feature of this job was the new doors to the cubicles. Historic Environment Scotland had specified that a digital print of the Castle be featured across the four cubicle doors. To achieve this we had to first agree on a suitable photograph with the required quality.

The photograph and the laminate finish for the doors were then sent to International Decorative Surfaces to get the photograph digitally printed on to the laminate. We then used our own van to transport the laminate very carefully to Forza doors in Horsham Southern England to have the laminate bonded to the doors and sent back up for installation in the washrooms.

Overall the project was completed successfully and a quality finish was achieved, giving one of Scotland’s most popular Castles (due to the success of the Outlander TV series both here and in the USA) with toilet and washroom facilities that match the quality of the attraction itself.
