We are delighted to be celebrating 30 years of Clansman Interiors, a milestone we are incredibly proud of. It gives us the opportunity to reflect on the people, projects and partnerships that have shaped our journey, and to thank everyone who has been part of it. Clansman has always been built on relationships, reliability and quality workmanship, and those values remain at the heart of everything we do today.
30 Years of Clansman Interiors
Clansman Interiors was founded in 1996 by Hugh Rattray and George Laurence, shortly joined by Ken Swindell, starting out as a commercial and industrial interiors contractor with a focus on practical, high-quality interior solutions. Over the years, the business has grown into an established principal contractor delivering commercial fit-outs, refurbishments, suspended ceilings, glazed and demountable partitioning, fire screens, washroom refurbishments, hygienic wall cladding, bespoke joinery and furniture solutions across Scotland and the wider UK.
Clansman remains a proudly family-owned business. Alasdair Rattray, Contracts Director, and David Rattray, Sales Director, are Hugh’s sons, while Lisa Marr, Director and Company Secretary, is George’s daughter. All three have worked their way up within the business and continue to play an active role in running the company today.
Over three decades, Clansman has expanded its capabilities to support projects of all sizes and sectors. From office refurbishments and fit-outs to education, healthcare, leisure, retail, industrial and public-facing environments. The business has continued to invest in specialist trades, trusted suppliers and flexible working practices, allowing it to deliver occupied refurbishments, fast-track projects and feature-rich commercial interiors with the same attention to detail that defined Clansman from the beginning.

How Commercial Interiors Have Changed Over 30 Years
Commercial interiors have changed significantly since Clansman began in 1996. Workplaces are no longer designed simply around desks and storage, they now need to support flexibility, collaboration, wellbeing, technology and long-term adaptability.
Flexible and hybrid working have made adaptable layouts and multi-purpose spaces far more important. Office design has shifted towards a better balance of open-plan areas, quiet zones, collaboration spaces and breakout areas, with acoustics and privacy now central considerations. Sustainability has become a bigger priority too, with clients looking more closely at material choices, longevity and low-waste solutions.
Above all, client expectations have risen; today’s commercial interiors need to look good, perform well and provide lasting value long after handover.
What 30 Years Have Taught Us
Thirty years has taught us that successful projects are built on much more than materials and workmanship. Every project starts with listening. Listening lets us understand how a space is used, what the client needs, and planning works around real operational requirements. Clear communication, accurate programming and reliable delivery matter just as much as the final finish.
Many refurbishment and fit-out projects take place in live environments, so working around clients and keeping businesses running throughout is something we take seriously. That approach has helped Clansman build lasting relationships and deliver projects with confidence across a wide range of sectors.
“Our aim has always been simple. To deliver quality work, look after our clients and build relationships that last. Thirty years on, those values are still what drive the business every day.”
What Hasn’t Changed
While the industry has changed, the principles behind Clansman Interiors haven’t. Quality workmanship, attention to detail, honest advice and dependable project delivery have always been central to how we work. Reliable delivery is still essential, especially when working around occupied premises, tight programmes or phased works. The strong relationships we’ve built with clients, subcontractors and suppliers remain one of the biggest reasons the business has stood the test of time.

The People Behind Clansman Interiors
Behind Clansman Interiors is a team of skilled people who have helped shape the business over many years. From project managers and site teams to office staff, specialist trades, subcontractors and suppliers. The family-business culture has created a sense of community that’s hard to replicate, with knowledge passed down through the company and a genuine pride in the work from people who have been part of the business for a long time.
30 Years of Projects and Partnerships
Over 30 years, Clansman Interiors has worked across a wide range of commercial and industrial environments including offices, education, healthcare, leisure, retail, transport, manufacturing and public-sector spaces. Each project has added to the company’s experience, broadening its understanding of how different buildings, teams and organisations operate.
From office fit-outs and refurbishments to glazed partitioning, suspended ceilings, washrooms, hygienic wall cladding, bespoke joinery and furniture installations, Clansman’s project history reflects both technical capability and the trust clients place in the business to deliver.
Long-standing relationships with clients, design teams, subcontractors and suppliers have been central to that, and many of those relationships have spanned years, sometimes decades.
Looking Ahead to the Next Chapter
As Clansman Interiors looks ahead, the focus remains on continuing to evolve while staying true to the values that have shaped the business for thirty years. We know the commercial interiors sector will keep changing, and Clansman will continue to move with it.
That means continuing to support clients from concept to completion, developing services and capabilities to meet changing needs, and investing in the people, skills and trusted partnerships that have always underpinned the quality of our work. Most importantly, it means remaining a family-owned business committed to long-term relationships, personal service and spaces built to last.
“The next chapter is about building on everything that has made Clansman successful; our people, our standards and our relationships, while continuing to adapt to what clients need from modern commercial interiors.”
